Statement by Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the decision of the Government of Israel regarding the construction of housing units in East Jerusalem
October 18, 2010
- The Government of Japan is disappointed with the announcement of the Government of Israel on October 14, regarding a bid for the construction of 238 housing units in East Jerusalem while the international community is making efforts for the resumption of direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. The Government of Japan urges Israel to freeze all settlement activities in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Japan requests that the construction plans not be implemented.
- At the same time, Japan urges both parties to refrain from violence.
- Japan strongly encourages both Israel and the Palestinians to focus on the goal of a two-state solution, which is important not only for the Middle East but also for the international community as a whole, to act so that mutual trust will be developed, and to continue direct negotiations tenaciously.
