Courtesy Call on Mr. Seiji Maehara, Minister for Foreign Affairs, by Ms. Ameerah Haq, Special Representative of the U.N. Secretary-General for Timor-Leste and Head of Mission of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT)

Mr. Seiji Maehara, Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call from Ms. Ameerah Haq, Special Representative of the U.N. Secretary-General for Timor- Leste and Head of Mission of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT), who is now visiting Japan, on October 5(Tue) for about 20 minutes from 16:10.
- Minister Maehara expressed his appreciation to Ms. Haq’s effort in leading UNMIT which has contributed to the stability of Timor-Leste. He also expressed his gratitude to her gesture of warmth at the sudden passing of the former Deputy Special Representative for Secretary-General Mr. Takahisa Kawakami in March such as her hosting the memorial ceremony held in Mr. Kawakami’s honor. Mr. Maehara stated that he had high expectations for Mr. Shigeru Mochida, who has succeeded Mr. Kawakami as one of Ms. Haq’s deputies. Furthermore, Minister Maehara conveyed Japan’s will to continue to extend the necessary support to UNMIT, which is expending every effort for the training of the Policia Nacional de Timor-Leste (PNTL) to avoid the recurrence of 2006 crisis.
- Ms. Haq responded by explaining to Mr. Maehara the situation on the ground and expressed her appreciation for Japan’s contribution to Timor-Leste and UNMIT including the dispatchment of military liaison officers, and also expressed her hope to continue to cooperate closely with Japan.
