Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Improvement of Relations Between the Republic of Turkey and the Republic of Armenia

- The Government of Japan welcomes the agreement on August 31 (Mon) between
the Republic of Turkey and the Republic of Armenia to start their internal
political consultations on the “Protocol on the Establishment of Diplomatic
Relations” and “Protocol on the Development of Bilateral Relations”,
both of which have been provisionally signed by the two countries, under
the mediation of Switzerland.
- The Government of Japan welcomes this development for the normalization of the relations between Turkey and Armenia, which will contribute to the peace and stability of the region, and expects further efforts from both countries towards normalizing the relations.
On August 31, Turkey and Armenia announced that they had provisionally signed the “Protocol on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations” and “Protocol on the Development of Bilateral Relations” under the mediation of Switzerland. Internal political consultations are due to be concluded in both countries within the next six weeks. The protocols will thereafter be officially signed and ratified by the Turkish and Armenian parliaments.
