Mr. Osamu Uno, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Talks with Maj-Gen Thein Swe, Minister for Transport, and Inspects Damage at the Port of Yangon

- From 14:00 on May 26 (Mon) local time, Mr. Osamu Uno, Vice Minister
for Foreign Affairs, now visiting Myanmar, talked with Maj-Gen Thein Swe,
Minister for Transport of Myanmar. Mr. Uno introduced three members
of the survey team, who had arrived in Myanmar on May 25, to investigate
sunken ships in the Port of Yangon, and asked for cooperation for their
survey.
- After the meeting, Mr. Thein Htay, Managing Director of Myanmar Port
Authority, described the damage done to the Port of Yangon in the presence
of Maj-Gen Thein Swe. Maj-Gen Thein Swe requested Japan’s assistance
in salvaging sunken ships to make the waterways safe, rehabilitation of
the pier for domestic commodity distribution, improvement of the weather
radar system to observe cyclones, etc.
- Mr. Uno said that he realized that the damage to the Port of Yangon
was extensive and that Japan would extend as much assistance as possible
in accordance with the report of the survey team.
- Mr. Uno then visited the Port of Yangon to observe and confirm the damaged pier for domestic commodity distribution, sunken ships in the harbor and ships driven ashore.
