Statement by Mr. Masahiko Koumura, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the Result of the Presidential Election in Taiwan
March 22, 2008
- In the presidential election in Taiwan, Mr. Ma Ying-jeou was elected.
- In this new situation, Japan hopes that the issue surrounding Taiwan will be resolved peacefully by direct dialogue between the parties concerned on the Taiwan Straits and that dialogue will resume soon for that purpose. Also from such a viewpoint, the Government of Japan is of consistent stance that it cannot support any unilateral attempt by either side to change the status quo.
- The stance of the Government of Japan toward Taiwan is as stated in the Japan-China Joint Statement, and it intends to maintain Japan-Taiwan relations as working relationship on a non-governmental basis in the future also.
