Meeting between Mr. Hitoshi Kimura, Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Atul Khare, Special Representative for the U.N. Secretary-General to Timor-Leste and Head of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT)

  1. On September 6 (Thu), Mr. Hitoshi Kimura, Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, met Mr. Atul Khare, Special Representative for the U.N. Secretary-General to Timor-Leste and Head of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT), who is now visiting Japan.
     
  2. Mr. Kimura appreciated the importance of the role which the UNMIT has been playing in Timor-Leste, and expressed his support for their efforts.  He said that Japan had provided assistance actively for the Timor-Leste’s efforts for the consolidation of peace and nation-building based on the conviction that its stability and development is extremely important for stability and peace in the Asia Pacific region.  In this context, he also said that he hoped the cooperative relationship between Japan and the United Nations in Timor-Leste would be further advanced.
     
  3. Mr. Khare, in response, expressed his appreciation for Japan’s contribution to Timor-Leste including the dispatch of Japanese civilian police officers to the UNMIT, and said that he hoped for Japan’s future contribution.
