Statement by Mr. Taro Aso, the Minister for Foreign Affairs on the Terrorism against Mr. Mohammed Ali al-Hassani, Governor of Al-Muthanna Province, Iraq

August 20, 2007

  1. Japan greatly feels shocked and indignant over the murder of Mr. Mohammed Ali al-Hassani, Governor of Al-Muthanna Province in Iraq by an act of terrorism on August 20.  Terrorism cannot be justified for any reason and Japan reiterates its firm condemnation of the act of terrorism.
  2. Govoner al-Hassani not only made great efforts in promoting the reconstruction of Al-Muthanna Province but tried very hard to facilitate Japan’s assistance provided for the Province through the Ground Self-Defense Force and ODA, and thus greatly contributed to the development of bilateral relations.
  3. Japan would like to mourn the loss of Governor al-Hassani and expects that Al-Muthanna Province and its people will overcome this tragedy and continue to make efforts for reconstruction.
