Mr. Viktor Cherkesov, Director of the Federal Drug Control Service of the Russian Federation, paid Courtesy Call on Foreign Minister Taro Aso

  1. On July 6, Mr. Taro Aso, Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call from Mr. Viktor Cherkesov, Director of the Federal Drug Control Service of the Russian Federation, for 40 minutes from 11:15 a.m.
  2. Mr. Aso and Mr. Cherkesov agreed that Japan and Russia would cooperate in stopping the production and smuggling of narcotics in Asia, including Afghanistan, North Korea and Southeast Asia.
  3. With regard to Japan-Russia cooperation in counternarcotics, they also agreed on accelerating the ongoing negotiations on a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty, which would give a legal basis to the authorities of the two countries for enhancing cooperation in this field.
  4. Finally, Mr. Aso congratulated Mr. Cherkesov on the decision to hold the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russian Federation, and Mr. Cherkesov said he looked forward to the realization of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2016.
