Assistance by the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security project “Promoting the Human Security Concept in the Arab Region”

- On the 29th of June (Friday), the Government of Japan and the United Nations (UN) decided to extend assistance totalling 220,350.00US dollars (approximately 25.56 million yen), through the Trust Fund for Human Security to a project entitled “Promoting the Human Security Concept in the Arab Region” that will be implemented by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
- In 2004, the Arabic translation of “Human Security Now” of
the Commission of Human Security was published and several conferences and meetings
followed the report in order to advocate and advance the idea of Human Security
in the Arab States region. This project aims to disseminate the human security
concept further among policy-makers, academics and civil society organizations
in the region in order to address various threats to human lives, livelihoods
and dignity through the following activities.
-Undertaking a study on threats, challenges and opportunities to human security as well as outcomes of previous human security initiatives in the region and preparing policy-advice papers for the High Level Conference, which will be held in the latter half of this project;
-Supporting the establishment and capacity building of a “Human Security Unit” at the League of Arab States General Secretariat for assisting states of the region in developing policies in line with the human security concept;
-Conducting a High-Level Conference on Human Security with the participation of policy-makers from member states of the League of Arab States, experts and the civil society to discuss the above-mentioned policy-advice papers and to adopt the final statements and/or recommendation on human security in the region.
- This project is expected to promote further acceptance of the concept of human security throughout the Arab States region.
