June 4, 2007
- A Japan Coast Guard aircraft confirmed the presence of “EARDO,” a ROK’s marine survey ship, in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), approximately 330 kilometers west of the Satsuma Peninsula, Kagoshima Prefecture, around 16:05 on May 31 (Thu). It was also confirmed that the ship was throwing three towing cables and conducting marine research. The ROK side has not requested prior consent of the Government of Japan for the ship to conduct marine research.
- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lodged a protest with the Embassy of the ROK concerning marine scientific research being conducted in Japan’s EEZ without Japan’s prior consent, and has urged the research activities to be ceased.
- The ROK side responded that it would convey the message to Seoul and confirm the relevant facts.
