On the Current Situation in Israel and the Palestinian Territories(Statement by Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
May 21, 2007
- The Government of Japan expresses its deep concern over the current situation in Gaza Strip. Japan deplores the rocket attacks on Israeli territory by the Palestinian militant groups, and calls on Israel to avoid any damage to the lives of the innocent Palestinians and the basic infrastructure.
- Such a situation threatens the lives of many Israeli and Palestinian people who long for peace, and runs counter to their hope to resolve the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution.
- Japan calls on both the Israeli and the Palestinian sides to exercise their utmost self-restraint to prevent further worsening of the situation. Japan will continue to engage proactively in the efforts for early resumption of the Middle East peace process, and to support the efforts of President Abbas of the Palestinian Authority to overcome the infighting among the Palestinians and to achieve peace with Israel.
