Dispatch of Election Observer Mission to Timor-Leste for Presidential Election

- A presidential runoff in Timor-Leste will be held on May 9 (Wed) between the two leading vote-getters at the presidential election held on April 9 (Mon), Mr. Francisco “Lu-Olo” Guterres, President of the National Parliament, and H.E. Dr. José Ramos Horta, Prime Minister and Minister for Defense.
- The Government of Japan decided to dispatch an election observer mission to this presidential runoff, following the previous mission for the presidential election dispatched earlier this month, and to cooperate in the international electoral observation activities with the intention of providing as much cooperation as possible for Timor-Leste’s nation-building.
- The mission is composed of eight members. Most members will leave Japan on May 6 (Mon) and will return to Japan on May 12 (Sat) after monitoring the election on the ground.
