Mr. Sergey Kirienko, Head of Russia’s Federal Agency for Atomic Energy, Pays a Courtesy Call on Mr. Taro Aso, Minister for Foreign Affairs

1.   In the afternoon of April 11 (Wed), Mr. Sergey Kirienko, Head of Russia’s Federal Agency for Atomic Energy, paid a courtesy call on Mr. Taro Aso, Minister for Foreign Affairs.

 2.   Mr. Aso told Mr. Kirienko that he would expect him to exert leadership so that negotiations will progress smoothly for the Japan-Russia Agreement for Cooperation in the Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy, on which Japan and Russia agreed to start when Mr. M. E. Fradkov, Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, visited Japan recently.  He also informed Mr. Kirienko that the Agreement establishing the ITER Organization and its related agreements were sent to the Diet for the Diet approval for their conclusion.

 3.   Mr. Kirienko said that in light of high expectations of Japanese and Russian business circles, he would endeavor to start negotiations for a Japan-Russia Nuclear Energy Agreement as early as possible.  He also said that he would make efforts to promptly conclude the Agreement establishing the ITER Organization and its related agreements.
