Joint Press Statement of Timor Leste’s Presidential Election

  1. As a presidential election in Timor Leste will take place on April 9 (Mon), the Government of Japan has decided to deliver a message to the international community with like-minded countries and an international institution.  On April 5 (Thu), H.E. Mr. Kenji Shimizu, Ambassador of Japan to Timor Leste; Ms. Eleanor Nagy, Charge d’Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of the United States of America; H.E. Mr. Joao Ramos Pinto, Ambassador of Portugal; H.E. Ms. Ruth Nuttall, Ambassador of New Zealand; and Mr. Miguel Amado, Special Representative of the European Commission, issued a joint press statement in Dili, the capital of Timor Leste.
  2. This joint press statement includes praise for this election as the first one conducted on Timor Leste’s initiative, and strong expectation that the presidential election would be held in a free, fair and peaceful manner.  It also expressed the will of the like-minded countries and institution to continue cooperation with Timor Leste.
