Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the agreement on Palestinian unity government

- The Government of Japan appreciates that Palestinian Authority President Abbas and Hamas Political Bureau Head Mr. Mishaal agreed after their talks in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, to form a unity government in order to end political difficulties in the Palestinian territories, regarding it as a positive step toward resumption of the peace process.
- Japan strongly expects that, based on this agreement, violence will cease and that the new government will make its efforts to advance the peace process with Israel. Japan will continue to closely follow the development.
- Japan also highly appreciates Saudi Arabia's mediation efforts toward the agreement on the unity government.
