Statement by Mr. Masahiko Koumura, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, on Terrorist Attack targeting former Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto

We are shocked by the fact that former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and a large number of people were killed in a terrorist attack targeting the former Prime Minister in Rawalpindi on December 27, Thursday.  I extend my deepest condolences to the victims and their bereaved families and express my sincere sympathy to those injured.  

The Government of Japan condemns in the strongest terms such heinous and inexcusable act of terrorism aimed at destroying with violence the efforts of Pakistani people to consolidate their democracy by holding a fair election.

I sincerely hope that the Pakistani people will overcome this tragedy and continue their effort to the fight terrorism to consolidate their democracy. Such efforts are important not only for Pakistan but also for the neighboring countries and the international community as a whole.  The Government of Japan would like to continue to support such efforts by the Pakistani people.
