Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Recent Situation in Israel and Palestinian Territories

  1. The Government of Japan shares the view expressed in the Chairman's Statement issued on the occasion of the G8 Foreign Ministers' Meeting on 29 June, and expresses its deep regret at the deterioration of the situation caused by the recent violence by the Palestinian extremist groups and by the military operations by the Israeli Defence Force.
  2. The Government of Japan calls on the Palestinian Authority to bring to an end the violence by the Palestinian extremist groups and to make every possible efforts to secure the immediate release of the Israeli soldier abducted on 25 June. The Government of Japan calls on the Government of Israel to avoid actions that may cause civilian casualties and damage civilian facilities. The Government of Japan is concerned that Israel has detained elected members of the Palestinian government and legislature.
  3. The Government of Japan is deeply concerned that this deterioration of the situation may negatively affect the future efforts towards peace. The Government of Japan renews its call on both the Israeli and the Palestinian sides to exercise their utmost self-restraint to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
