- On December 14, prior to the European Council meeting (Brussels, Belgium), an event celebrating the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the European Union effective on January 1, 2007 was held. Japan offers its congratulations to the two countries on their accession to the EU and hopes that their accession to the EU will contribute to the further development of Japan-EU relations as well as Japan's bilateral relations with Bulgaria and Romania.
- As Japan and the EU share the fundamental values such as freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as well as special responsibilities in the international community, Japan intends to strengthen cooperation with the EU including the two countries, based on a strategic partnership, toward building an "Arc of Freedom and Prosperity."
