Statement by Mr. Taro Aso, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the Coup in Fiji
December 6, 2006
Japanese
- Japan is deeply concerned that on December 5, the situation in the Republic of the Fiji Islands came to the point that the national military forces headed by Commander Bainimarama took over the country's executive authority and announced that they would establish an interim administration.
- Japan strongly hopes to see the situation normalized and the democratic political system restored promptly.
- While the Government of Japan has so far not confirmed any casualties among Japanese nationals living in or visiting Fiji, it has been exerting utmost efforts to ensure their safety by providing information and issuing warnings through its Embassy.
