Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Recent Situation in Israel and the Palestinian Territories

November 9, 2006

  1. The Government of Japan expresses its deep concern over the situation in Gaza in which many Palestinian civilians fell victims by the recent Israeli military operations and, in particular, deplores the fact that more civilian lives were claimed yesterday by the shelling of the Israel Defence Forces on private houses in Beit Hanoun.
  2. The Government of Japan calls on the Government of Israel to make its serious efforts to investigate the cause of the incident and to prevent any recurrence of such incident through the inquiry committee established by itself, and calls on the Palestinian Authority to take necessary measures to bring to an immediate end of the attacks against Israel by the Palestinian militant groups particularly in Gaza.
  3. The Government of Japan is deeply concerned that this deterioration of the situation may negatively affect the future efforts towards peace. The Government of Japan renews its call on both the Israeli and the Palestinian sides to exercise their utmost self-restraint to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
