Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Iraq's Participation in the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) Training Course

July 6, 2005

  1. The Government of Japan welcomes the participation of Iraq in the CWC Training Course (July 6 - 8, Hague) with the intention of acceding to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in the near future.
  2. In the past Iraq has actually used chemical weapons. That such a nation should join the CWC is important from the viewpoint of promoting disarmament and non-proliferation of WMDs, and securing peace and security in the region. The Government of Japan therefore has decided to extend about 23,600 euros to the parties concerned in Iraq as an attendance fee for this Training Course.
  3. Japan strongly hopes that, taking this opportunity, Iraq will accede to the CWC at an early stage. Japan also calls on States not Party to the Convention such as Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, and North Korea to join the CWC promptly.
