Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Establishment of the Commission of Truth and Friendship by Indonesia and Timor-Leste

  1. Japan welcomes the decision made by both the Government of Indonesia and Timor-Leste on March 9 (Wed) to establish the Commission of Truth and Friendship to comprehensively clarify the truth of the reported violations of human rights in 1999 in Timor-Leste.

  2. Japan hopes that the activities of the commission will further promote the reconciliation of the people of both countries.

  3. Japan encourages the commission and the United Nations' Commission of Experts set up in January to coordinate closely and hopes that both commissions will promptly accomplish their own aims.
