Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Establishment of the Commission of Truth and Friendship by Indonesia and Timor-Leste

- Japan welcomes the decision made by both the Government of Indonesia and Timor-Leste on March 9 (Wed) to establish the Commission of Truth and Friendship to comprehensively clarify the truth of the reported violations of human rights in 1999 in Timor-Leste.
- Japan hopes that the activities of the commission will further promote the reconciliation of the people of both countries.
- Japan encourages the commission and the United Nations' Commission of Experts set up in January to coordinate closely and hopes that both commissions will promptly accomplish their own aims.
