Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Inauguration of the Second Qurie Cabinet of the Palestinian Interim Self-Government Authority

  1. Japan welcomes the news that the second cabinet led by Prime Minister Ahmad Qurie has taken office on February 24 (local time) under the leadership of Mr. Mahmoud Abbas, the President of the Palestinian Interim Self-Government Authority, and that the new Abbas administration is ready to work in earnest with the formation of the new cabinet.

  2. The Government of Japan strongly supports the peace efforts of Mr. Abbas, who has been making consistent efforts since he assumed the post of the President on January 15 with strong determination for the resumption of the peace process, including the realization of direct dialogue with Prime Minister Sharon of Israel.

  3. Japan expects the new cabinet will proactively work for the reconstruction of an effective and accountable institutions. Japan intends to play a more positive role in advancing the Middle East peace process, including the provision of active assistance to the Palestinians.
