Statement by Mr. Nobutaka Machimura, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the Approval of the Draft Constitution of Iraq by the National Referendum

  1. On October 25 (Tue), the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq announced that the draft constitution was approved by the national referendum on October 15. Japan welcomes this as it represents a highly important step in the development of Iraq's political process.
  2. With this approval of the draft constitution, the National Assembly election is now scheduled to be held on December 15, which will result in the establishment of a new government. Japan hopes that the political process including the upcoming National Assembly election will proceed with harmonious coordination among religious and ethnic groups.
  3. Japan will continue to actively support the Iraqi people's nation-building efforts along with the international community.
