Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the National Referendum on the Draft Constitution of Iraq

  1. On October 15 (Sat), the national referendum on the draft constitution of Iraq was conducted without major disruption. Japan welcomes this as it represents an important step in the development of Iraq's political process.
  2. Japan pays respect to the endeavors of the Iraqi Transitional Government which carried out the national referendum, and to the people of Iraq who went to the polling stations despite all the difficulties particularly in terms of security situations. Japan also appreciates the efforts by the United Nations which cooperated in the implementation of the referendum.
  3. Japan hopes that the Iraqi people's nation-building efforts will proceed with harmonious coordination among religious and ethnic groups, and intends to continue providing active support along with the international community.
