Mr. Nobutaka Machimura, Minister for Foreign Affairs, made the following statement on the election of Mr. Mahmoud Abbas, the Chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) for the new Ra'ees of the Palestinian Interim Self-government Authority.

  1. Mr. Mahmoud Abbas, the Chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, was elected as the new Ra'ees of the Palestinian Interim Self-Government Authority as a result of the election held on January 9th, 2005. On behalf of the Government and the people of Japan, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Abbas, the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinians on his election.

  2. The Government of Japan is of the view that the election was conducted largely in a free, fair and transparent manner.

  3. A historical opportunity exists to advance the "Roadmap" which aims at the co-existence of the two states, Israel and Palestine, in peace and security. It is my strong expectation that Mr. Abbas, by exerting his leadership, will seize this opportunity to work for the re-establishment of responsible governance and the restoration of peace and security as well as to make further efforts for the realization of peace with Israel.

  4. The Government of Japan will play even larger role for the realization of peace in the Middle East. I will discuss on this in person with the respective leadership of the Israeli and Palestinian sides during my upcoming visit to the region which is scheduled to start from 15th of this month.
