Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Advisory Opinion of the ICJ concerning the Legal Consequences of Israel's Construction of a Wall by Israel
July 10, 2004
- The Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) states that the construction of the wall being built by Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is contrary to international law, and that Israel is obliged therefore to terminate the illegal situation. Japan expects that Israel acts appropriately on this matter.
- Chain of violence continues between the Israelis and the Palestinians, and consequently, implementation of the Roadmap has stagnated. Japan is of the view that fundamental solution to the problem needs to be brought about through negotiations between the two parties concerned in accordance with the Roadmap, which aims at establishing the two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security. Japan will continuously encourage the both parties to take steps to fulfill their obligations under the Roadmap.
