Ms. Yoriko Kawaguchi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, issued the following statement regarding a car bomb attack that took place on May 17 (Mon) in Baghdad.
- Japan is deeply shocked and angry at the car-bomb attack which occurred in Baghdad on May 17 (Mon) and which killed Mr. Ezzidin Salim, the President of the Iraqi Governing Council, and several others. Terrorism cannot be justified for any reason, and Japan firmly condemns such atrocious acts.
- Japan expresses heartfelt sympathy to the victims and condolences to the bereaved families. Japan also offers sincere sympathy to those injured and prays for their speedy recovery.
- Japan strongly expects that despite such a terrorist act, the Iraqi people will steadily advance with Iraq's political process, regain sovereignty and reconstruct the country as quickly as possible.
