Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the conflict between the Israeli Defense Forces and the Palestinians
May 12, 2004
- The Government of Japan is gravely concerned over the latest conflict that occurred since the 11th May between the Israeli Defense Forces and the Palestinians in Zeitoun area in the Gaza Strip, causing many deaths and injuries on both sides.
- Given that there is little progress in implementing the "Roadmap", the Government of Japan is deeply apprehensive that this conflict would lead to the further expansion of the chain of hatred and violence, thus making more difficult the realization of peace between the Israelis and Palestinians.
- The Government of Japan strongly urges the Israeli Government to exercise maximum self-restraint in order to prevent further deterioration of the situation, and the Palestinian side to make the maximum efforts in the crackdown of the extremists so as to have a tangible result.
