Telephone Conversation made by Ms. Yoriko Kawaguchi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, to Dr. Seyyed Kamal Kharrazi, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding the case of Japanese hostages

On April 11(Sun), Ms. Yoriko Kawaguchi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, had a telephone conversation with Dr. Seyyed Kamal Kharrazi, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran in which she requested Iran's cooperation for the release of the Japanese hostages. The conversation started at 15:00 hours Japan time and lasted for about 10 minutes.
- Minister Kawaguchi said that the case is an impermissible act of terrorism and Japan is making its utmost efforts for the release of the hostages. She added that the perpetrators expressed their intention to release the hostages, but actual release was not confirmed yet. She also said that the Japanese side had already requested Iran's coopereation and said she asked for Iran's continued help by any means for the release of the hostages.
- Minister Kharrazi condemned the incident and said that Iran would like to continue to cooperate with Japan including the provision of information aimed at the release of the hostages.
- Both ministers referred to the International Conference on Afghanistan, which was recently held in Berlin, and agreed that the two countries would cooperate for the reconstruction of Afghanistan.
