Ms. Yoriko Kawaguchi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, issued the following statement regarding the suicide-bombing attacks by Palestinian extremists that took place on March 14 (Sun) (local time) in the port of Ashdod, to the south of Tel Aviv.
  1. Japan is deeply shocked by the successive suicide-bombing attacks in the port of Ashdod to the south of Tel Aviv, which occurred in the evening of March 14 (Sun) (local time) and suffered a large number of casualties. Japan expresses sympathy to the victims, condolences to the bereaved families and heartfelt sympathy to those who are injured. Terrorism cannot be justified for any reason, and Japan firmly condemns atrocious terrorism that victimizes many innocent people.

  2. Japan is deeply concerned that the peace process is making little progress and that continued acts of violence will further deteriorate the situation. The Palestinian Authority must make utmost efforts to control extremists to prevent such atrocities and demonstrate tangible results. Japan strongly expects the Israeli side to exercise utmost self-restraint to calm down the situation. Japan also strongly expects that the parties concerned on both the Israeli and the Palestinian sides will hold a summit meeting at an early date and resume efforts as soon as possible to implement the Roadmap through dialogue and cooperation.
