Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Election of Ambassador Tibor Tóth, the Permanent Representative of Hungary to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva and the Conference on Disarmament, as the next Executive Secretary of the Provisional Technical Secretariat of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) Preparatory Commission

  1. Japan welcomes the election of Ambassador Tibor Tóth, the Permanent Representative of Hungary to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva and the Conference on Disarmament, as the next Executive Secretary of the Provisional Technical Secretariat of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) Preparatory Commission. Ambassador Tibor Tóth was elected at the 23rd session of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) held on November 19 (local time) (Chairperson: Mr. Yukio Takasu, Ambassador to the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna).

  2. Japan attaches great importance to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) as a concrete and realistic measure to support the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) regime and to realize the global peace and security free of nuclear weapons; and intends to continue proactive cooperation with the Provisional Technical Secretariat under the new Executive Secretary in their efforts for such aims as the early entry into force of the CTBT and the establishment of the International Monitoring System.
