Training of Doctors in Al-Muthanna Governorate, Iraq, to Fight Infectious Disease
November 18, 2004
- The Government of Japan will provide training for 10 doctors attached to hospitals in Samawah and neighboring cities in Al-Muthanna Governorate in the southern part of Iraq from November 24 (Wed) to December 17 (Fri) to fight infectious disease.
- This training targets doctors specializing in digestive and respiratory systems who work at core hospitals in Al-Muthanna Governorate, such as Al Samawah General Hospital and Al-Khidhur Hospital in the suburbs, to which Japan has provided medical equipment.
The doctors will receive specialized lectures on Japan's health administration and on infectious diseases and will also visit medical institutions to acquire knowledge and skills. It is expected that the training program will contribute to the improvement of the medical services in alimentary and respiratory diseases and to the establishment of a system to prevent infectious disease in the region.
- Japan places importance on cooperation in the field of medical and health care services, together with electricity, education, water and sanitation, as such cooperation will contribute to the reconstruction of the livelihood of Iraqi people. Similar training is being provided for nurses from Al-Muthanna Governorate.
Japan has also been promoting assistance in the field of medical and health care services with the cooperation of neighboring countries. It provided medical training at Cairo University in March and October this year, in cooperation with Egypt, for a total of 215 Iraqi doctors and nurses.
- The forthcoming training will be implemented as part of a training program of JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency).
