Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Election of Transitional President of Somalia

- Japan welcomes the election of Mr. Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed as Transitional President of Somalia as a result of a ballot by the members of transitional federal parliament of Somalia held on Sunday, October 10, 2004 (local time) in Nairobi, Kenya. Japan also pays tribute to the efforts made by the countries and organizations concerned including the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Republic of Kenya, which have been leading the Somali peace negotiations.
- The election of the Transitional President, which was achieved through selection by Somalia's political leaders and others concerned, is an important step toward concrete peace in Somalia. Japan expects that moves toward lasting peace will be further accelerated in Somalia including the establishment of the transitional federal government under Transitional President Yusuf.
- Under the recognition that Somalia's peace and stability is important not only for the Horn of Africa region but for the whole of Africa, Japan intends to cooperate with the international community for realizing peace in Somalia.
