- On October 1 (Friday), the Government of Japan and the United Nations (UN) decided to extend assistance of a total of 998,942.22 US dollars (approximately 109 million yen) through the Trust Fund for Human Security for the program "Assistance to the restoration of food security through the provision of agricultural inputs to the vulnerable population, particularly the IDPs and returnees and support to the structuring of community initiatives for a social recovery" to be implemented in the Republic of Burundi by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
- This project aims at assisting vulnerable households in Burundi, particularly internally displaced persons (IDPs) and repatriated Burundians returning mainly from Tanzania, through the provisions of basic agricultural inputs and equipments and technical assistance. The activities included in this project are as follows:
(1) Providing technical assistance for the structuring of community-based organizations and groupings in order to build their production and management capacity; (2) Providing basic agricultural inputs for food production (e.g. seeds and plants, agricultural tools, fertilizers) to 20,000 vulnerable households; (3) Supporting the creation, rehabilitation and management of the community storage facilities and assisting in the rehabilitation of handicrafts units, including blacksmith workshops; (4) Assisting in improving and diversifying rural and agricultural activities in order to generate an increase in revenue with support to micro-projects such as poultry, beekeeping and vegetable gardening.
- This project is expected to assist in the restoration of confidence as well as improvement of agricultural productivity within rural communities in Burundi through the implementation of the abovementioned activities.
The Trust Fund for Human Security was established in the UN Secretariat in March 1999 by the initiative of the Government of Japan, with total contributions of 25.9 billion yen (approximately US$ 227 million) up to the present. The Trust Fund has assisted numerous projects of UN agencies that address various threats against human life, livelihood and dignity, from the perspective of Human Security.
