Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Palestinian Suicide Bombings in Israel

September 10, 2003

  1. The Government of Japan is greatly shocked by the suicide bombings that occurred in the suburbs of Tel Aviv in West Jerusalem in the night of September 9 (local time), causing many deaths and casualties. I extend my sincere sympathy for those who died in the incident, condolences to the bereaved families, and heartfelt sympathy to the injured.

  2. Terrorism cannot be justified for any reason. Japan renews its firm condemnation against terrorist attacks that victimize many innocent lives of the people.

  3. The Government of Japan is deeply concerned that the "Roadmap" is at a critical stage. Japan considers that the "Roadmap" is the only way for peace, therefore, it is indispensable for both parties to immediately resume their efforts for peace along with the "Roadmap."

  4. For that purpose, it is necessary for both parties to make the utmost efforts and exercise maximum self-restraint to end the violence. The Palestinian Authority must resolutely fight against violence by the extremists. Also Israel needs to consider the consequences of its own actions and act with prudence and caution. Japan will also support as much as possible the efforts for peace by both parties as a member of the international community.
