Statement by Minister for Foreign Affairs Yoriko Kawaguchi on the Bomb Attack on U.N. Headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq

August 20, 2003

  1. I am outraged by the car bomb attack that took place on the U.N. Headquarters in Baghdad shortly after 4:00 p.m. on August 19 (Japan time: after 9:00 p.m. on the same day) and killed and injured a large number of people. The Government of Japan strongly condemns this indiscriminate terrorist attack on U.N. staff, who are working hard to give humanitarian and reconstruction assistance to Iraq.

  2. I extend my sincere sympathy for those killed in this attack and condolences to the bereaved families, and also pray for the quick recovery of the injured.

  3. The Government of Japan will continue to cooperate with the international community for the reconstruction of Iraq.
