Statement by Ms. Yoriko Kawaguchi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on a Palestinian Suicide Bombing in Israel and the Israeli Counter-attacks

June 12, 2003
Japanese

  1. The Government of Japan is greatly shocked by the suicide bombing that occurred in Jerusalem in the afternoon of June 11 (local time), causing many deaths and casualties. I extend my sincere sympathy for those who died in the incident, condolences to the bereaved families, and heartfelt sympathy to the injured.

  2. Terrorism cannot be justified for any reason. Japan renews its firm condemnation against terrorist attacks that victimize many innocent lives of the people. Also, Israeli attacks in Gaza in response to the suicide attack are regrettable and do not serve for the improvement of the situation.

  3. It is extremely deplorable that such incidents took place, when the sincere efforts for progress in the Middle East peace by the Israelis and the Palestinians, as well as the international society centering on the United States are just about to start. Fighting against violence by the extremists is indispensable in order to end violence and to achieve peace in the Middle East. The Government of Japan urges the Palestinian Authority to exert its utmost efforts to control extremists, and strongly wishes that the both sides, Israelis and Palestinians, continue dialogue for peace and exercise their maximum self-restraints.
