Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Yoriko Kawaguchi, on the Appointment of Mr. Nobuyasu Abe, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as the New Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs of the United Nations (UN)
May 29, 2003
- The Government of Japan welcomes the announcement on May 29 (Thu) that Mr. Nobuyasu Abe, the current Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has been appointed the UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs effective July 1 2003.
- The Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs superintends the UN's Department of Disarmament Affairs, which is engaged in promoting disarmament activities. I recognize this as a significant post that supports the UN General Assembly and the Conference on Disarmament, promotes progress on small arms issues and regional disarmament activities, provides information on UN disarmament activities, and takes the lead in other assignments.
- Ambassador Abe will assume his new responsibilities on July 1. I am sure that he will proactively contribute to UN disarmament activities, making good use of his past broad experience as a diplomat.
