Statement by Ms. Yoriko Kawaguchi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the Tokyo Meeting of the Parties Concerned on the Issue of Aceh, Indonesia

- Japan welcomes the decision to hold a meeting in Tokyo in May 17 (Sat) between the Government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) for a peaceful solution to the issue of Aceh in Indonesia.
- Japan has been extending indirect support for a peaceful solution to the Aceh issue and has decided to provide a venue for the dialogue between the two parties.
- Japan, recognizing that stability in Indonesia is extremely important for the peace and stability of the Asian region, strongly hopes that the Aceh issue will be solved immediately and peacefully within the territorial integrity of Indonesia and will continue to extend every ancillary support to that end.
