Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Yoriko Kawaguchi, on the Israeli Incursions into the Palestinian Territories
May 1, 2003
- On May 1st, Israeli troops made incursions into Gaza city and Hebron in the Palestinian autonomous territories. This occurred at the very moment when both Israel and the Palestinians are expected to exert efforts toward peace, just after the announcement of the "Roadmap" on April 30th. The Government of Japan condemns these incursions as they impede the implementation of the "Roadmap".
- On April 28th, I requested the Israeli side to create an environment which would facilitate Mr. Abbas' cabinet to carry out reforms including on security. I reiterate this, and call on the Israeli Government to halt the incursions immediately.
- The Government of Japan urges both Israeli and Palestinian sides to exert maximum restraint, maximum efforts to break the vicious cycle of violence, and efforts for peace through the implementation of the "Roadmap". At the same time, the Government of Japan will extend cooperation for efforts towards peace from both parties.
