Food Aid to the Suffering People in Iraq and Iraqi Refugees in Neighboring Countries
April 16, 2003
- The Government of Japan has decided to extend food aid of 1.4 billion yen through the World Food Programme (WFP) to the suffering people in Iraq and Iraqi refugees in neighboring countries. Notes to this effect were exchanged on April 16 (Wed) in Rome between Ms. Nobuko Matsubara, Japanese Ambassador to Italy, and Mr. Jwan-Jacques Graaisse, Deputy Executive Director of WFP.
- This food aid is part of the humanitarian assistance of up to 100 million dollars that the Government of Japan has announced on April 8 in response to the U.N. flash appeal for humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people of March 28. The aid will provide funds that will be used to purchase beans (about 7,000 tons) and 10,000 tons of rice that is stored in Japan, which are both in great demand in Iraq.
