Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Palestinian situation

October 22, 2003

  1. It is deplorable that a series of air strikes on Gaza city and the incursion into Ramallah on the West Bank by the Israeli Defense Forces since October 20th have caused a large number of casualties among ordinary citizens there and further worsened the situation. The Government of Japan expresses its deep condolences to the bereaved families and heartfelt sympathy to those who have been injured.

  2. The Government of Japan strongly expects that Israel will exercise maximum self-restraint and calm down the situation. At the same time, Japan firmly hopes that the Palestinian Authority will immediately crack down on the extremists, which is the most urgent task it faces, and make steady progress.

  3. The Government of Japan strongly wishes that both Israelis and Palestinians will strive to calm down the situation and resume their efforts to implement the Roadmap.
