Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the siege of the compound of Palestinian Authority Chairman

September 20, 2002

  1. The Israeli Defence Forces surrounded the compound of the Chairman of the Palestinian Authority with an aim of isolating Chairman Arafat. The Government of Japan thinks it is counter-productive, and demands that the IDF should end the siege as soon as possible.

  2. While it is needless to say that Chairman Arafat and the Palestinian Authority should exhaust every possible measure to crack down on the extremists, the Government of Japan, once again, urges both Israelis and Palestinians to exercise maximum restraint.
