Emergency Aid for Mudslide Disaster in Tajikistan

  1. On August 16 (Fri), the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency assistance in kind (360 water tanks, 8 rolls of plastic sheeting, 400 towels and 12 electricity generators) equivalent to approximately four million yen to the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, which has sustained damage from a large mudslide.

  2. In Tajikistan, a large-scale mudslide which occurred on August 7 in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region in the southeastern part of the country caused great human and material damage: more than 75 dead or missing, a great number of people injured, more than 600 afflicted in total, more than 75 houses collapsed, and damage to bridges, agricultural land, livestock, irrigation facilities, roads, telecommunication network and other material property.

  3. In Tajikistan, the displaced persons whose villages have been swept away are forced to lead a difficult life as refugees. The Government of Tajikistan, which is trying to take measures to support these inhabitants, has decided that further assistance is needed from the international community and asked the Government of Japan for aid.

  4. The Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency aid from a humanitarian point of view and in light of the friendly relations between Japan and Tajikistan.
