Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Bombing Incident in Jerusalem

August 1, 2002

  1. The Government of Japan is deeply shocked by the bombing incident in the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in the afternoon of July 31. The Government of Japan expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and heartfelt sympathy to the injured.

  2. Terrorism cannot be justified for whatever reason. The Government of Japan feels strong indignation at and resolutely condemns such an act of terrorism aimed at innocent civilians. It is extremely unfortunate that such an incident occurred when serious efforts are being made by the international community to achieve peace, and the efforts for dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians were expected to resume.

  3. Japan once again strongly urges Chairman Arafat and the Palestinian Authority to make utmost crackdown efforts against extremists, and expects that the Israeli government will exercise maximum restraint.
