Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the air raid over Gaza city

July 23, 2002

  1. It is deplorable that the July 23 Israeli air strike on Gaza city in the early morning caused a large number of casualties among ordinary citizens there. The Government of Japan expresses its deep condolences to the bereaved families and heartfelt sympathy to those who have been injured.

  2. Government of Japan is afraid that the attack conducted by the Israeli Defense Forces which involved civilian population aggravates hatred among the Palestinians against Israelis and would not serve to improve the situation.

  3. At the time when the international community is making a series of endeavors to realize peace, the Government of Japan once again urges both the Israelis and the Palestinians to break the vicious cycle of violence, and urges Israel in particular to exercise maximum self-restraint.
