Statement by Ms. Yoriko Kawaguchi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the suicide bombing in Israel

June 18, 2002
Japanese

  1. I am deeply shocked by the suicide bombing in Gillo in the suburbs of South Jerusalem in Israel on the morning of June 18, which caused a large number of casualties among ordinary citizens. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and heartfelt sympathy to the injured.

  2. Terrorism cannot be justified for any reason. We feel indignation at such an act of terrorism aimed at innocent civilians and resolutely condemn it.

  3. Serious efforts by the international community continue, so that the Israelis and the Palestinians get out of this tragic vicious cycle of violence. Japan once again strongly urges both parties to seek for peace through negotiations and to cease all actions which may become a hindrance to a commencement of such negotiations.
