Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Appointment as Deputy Head of the United Nations Mission of Support in East Timor of Mr. Sukehiro Hasegawa, Special Advisor on Crime Prevention and Recovery of the United Nations Development Programme

- At noon on June 14 (Japan time: 1:00 a.m., June 15) in New York, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced the appointment of Mr. Sukehiro Hasegawa as Deputy Head of the United Nations Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET) and at the same time as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General in East Timor. Mr. Hasegawa is currently Special Advisor on Crime Prevention and Recovery of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Geneva.
- Japan welcomes Mr. Hasegawa's appointment as Deputy Head of UNMISET, as Japan intends to extend as much assistance as possible for the nation-building of East Timor, which became independent on May 20 this year, and to cooperate with the new country in building future-oriented friendly and close relations.
