Statement by Ms. Yoriko Kawaguchi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the terrorist suicide attack in Israel

June 5, 2002
Japanese

  1. I am deeply shocked by the terrorist suicide attack in the suburbs of Megiddo in Israel on the morning of June 5, which caused a number of casualties among ordinary civilians. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and heartfelt sympathy to the injured.

  2. Terrorism cannot be justified for any reason. We feel indignation at such an act of terrorism aimed at innocent civilians and resolutely condemn it. This act of terrorism is particularly deplorable, considering that a certain progress has been observed as a result of the international efforts for calming down the situation in the region and for resuming the peace process.

  3. Japan once again strongly urges Chairman Arafat and the Palestinian Authority to exert their maximum efforts to crack down on the extremists.

  4. Japan, at the same time, urges Israelis and Palestinians to seek for peace through negotiations.
